At this point, you may have already decided your company is in need of a fulfillment service. In addition, you should have educated yourself on some basics about fulfillment. Now, learn further about the process in order to make sure you are experiencing a great return on investment and the process is working smoothly. The following information refers to components of the fulfillment process and areas you should examine before finally selecting a fulfillment vendor. Consider the following.
The warehouse and staff
Fulfillment houses handle several accounts at any given time. Make sure they have enough room to handle your inventory at all times. This includes episodes (as around the holidays) when your items may be in higher demand.
You are aspiring to become more popular. This means after some time, you will have a higher number of orders. The fulfillment house needs to have room and enough manpower to compensate for when your company expands.
Reputation
Everyone needs to start somewhere; but, you are better off choosing a fulfillment company that has been in business for at least a couple of years. Also, each company will have fabulous things to say on their behalf, but it is better to hear these accolades from outside references. Ask the fulfillment house to suit you with at least three to five references.
Do they want you?
Most likely a vendor will gladly accept new clients, but not necessarily. Supply them with information about your current business situation (not where you would like to be, but where you are now). They may have criteria for minimum orders or not have a lot of warehouse room to spare for a bigger business. Be forward and realistic with them as soon as possible as to not waste your time or theirs.
The day-to-day
There are quite a few day-to-day operations you want to consider. One of the most important is the efficiency of your vendor. Keeping error rates low is important because most consumers will not realize there is a difference between your product and the company that ships the product. How quickly orders are shipped and the accuracy at which these procedures happen will mean a lot to consumers.
You may have products that are sold in bulk. You want to make sure you are charged for the bulk package and not the individual components contained within. Research how well the fulfillment house keeps track of orders picked.
As aforementioned, consumers expect to get their orders in a timely fashion. What is the level of alacrity in reference to the time products are received by the warehouse and stocked on the shelves ready for shipping?
Communication
How are you tracking your own inventory and communicating with your fulfillment house? It is important to have an efficient software system set in place in order to keep tabs on inventory numbers and how well items are selling.
Your fulfillment house is a separate business entity, but it is an extension of your business and should be communicated with as if the process of fulfillment was being addressed in-house.
Customer service
Fulfillment is a broad industry. Most service providers address your needs end-to-end, which means the episodes of taking the order from the customer to shipping the product to the consumer. Whether you use your fulfillment vendor for some or all services needed, you must make sure there is a superior level of customer service being employed.
Ideally, you want to streamline the process at all levels. Customers have many options these days. In their eyes, the only difference between you and a competitor is the speed, efficiency, and support employed by your company and its affiliates. Make sure your fulfillment vendor understands the importance of customer service.
